Tea is a large part of Chengdu’s culture. Tea houses can be found everywhere, from parks to the middle of the city. Most of these are simple and modern, with plain wooden tables and bamboo chairs.

But just 30 minutes from the Chengdu airport in Pengzhen, you can find a Mao-era teahouse with uneven floors and revolutionary memorabilia.

Mahjong is also a huge part of Chengdu’s culture. The rules are simplified from Cantonese mahjong.

The doors to the teahouse aren’t really doors at all. They’re wooden panels slotted into the entrance.

A barber works on the street outside the teahouse.
